Tutorial:

Fundamental Systems Science Principles
This presentation is for systems science scholars,
practitioners, and
students who are interested in the fundamental principles of systems
science and in the unification of the "hard" (nonliving
systems) and the
"soft" (living systems) sciences. Emergence of systems
science
principles is presented from a historical perspective. The fundamental
principles applicable to both nonliving and living systems are
stated
along with those principles applicable only to living systems.
The
development and verification of these principles are described.
Unification of the nonliving and the living systems sciences is
also
treated.
Dear ISSS Colleagues and Friends,
Call for Participation at Asilomar: Daily Morning Roundtable!
Everyone is invited to our third annual morning Roundtable
to take place
daily from 7:15-8:15AM, before breakfast, July 9-July 13, Room
TBA. Join
us every day, or whenever you like! (This year, we also will be
exploring a
"Wrap Up Roundtable" after the plenary session on July
13.)
Our Roundtable purposes are to open a space for daily
reflection on our
ideals, that is, what we want to learn and create; to increase
time for each
of us to talk from our hearts and minds about what we are thinking,
experiencing, and learning now; and to be listened to by the others
in the
group, enjoying and learning with each other in a new way. To
make our
purposes and format transparent, we will have the roundtable guidelines
on
each chair for easy referral. Our format is: We spend 6 minutes
listening
to the Roundtable guidelines; we then spend 54 minutes on individual
reflections or learning reports, time distributed equally among
all
present (e.g. 27 people = about 2 minutes each). Our suggested
topic for
the first morning might be: "What situations and projects
did you leave
behind to come here, and what could happen here that would make
it worth
your while?" Each day, a different topic will be suggested
by the
facilitator of the day.
Relating to the ISSS general conference themes, the
Roundtable's aim is to
cover two agendas. First, in one short hour each day for five
days in a
row, we will hear twenty-plus points of view around an agenda
or topic of
interest to ISSS members and guests, including points of view
from the
underrepresented and the under-appreciated. Second, we will continue
exploring this new type of "Roundtable" whose processes
are congruent with
many of our values and purposes. Namely, it provides new opportunities
for
values clarification, equity, diversity appreciation, authenticity,
critical
self-reflective listening/ speaking, as well as shared leadership/service:
that is, sharing the prestige of leadership and the workload of
service
among all who attend. Moreover, we propose that, just as we break
the sound
barrier when we travel faster than the speed of sound, we can
break the
communication barrier when we hear 25 authentic viewpoints in
50 minutes.
Please contact us to express your interest in attending
so that we can plan
for handouts, seating, and coffee.
Looking forward to exploring this with you all,
Sue Gabriele
