Instance Specification Blind Variation and Selective Retention
"... Donald T. Campbell, who articulated what is probably the most generalized characterization of selection processes as distinct from other forms of knowledge creation. He characterized the essence of selection (as opposed to instruction) theories of adaptation and knowledge generation with the simple aphorism 'blind variation and selective retention'. This catchphrase highlights two distinguishing features of the selection logic: first, that the source of variation is unrelated to the conditions that favor preservation of a given variant; and second, that there is differential persistence of some variants with respect to others. As we will discuss in greater detail in later chapters, the defining criterion is not the absence of ententional processes, but the absence of any specific control of the variants produced by the process the determines their differential persistence."
