"This process of specializing knowledge within communities of experts has simultaneously created many important gains and a few difficulties. The process has advanced human knowledge and facilitated humans’ ability to create large societies of abundance. These societies of abundance provide the majority of their members with food, housing, economic security, and many amenities of life, the quality of which passes well beyond what could have been imagined even two centuries ago. … The changes have also created serious potential perils generated by humans themselves: for example, pollution, overpopulation, and nuclear arms. In the intellectual realm, the changes have left us with no overviews of the world or of human knowledge; there are also many overclaims arising from individual disciplines of knowledge. These two difficulties have seriously distorted our understanding of the whole."
