"The basic structural pattern which exists throughout the universe is very striking. One feels intuitively that it points to something quite fundamental which has not yet been clearly grasped, but which, it is fairly obvious, has some connection with evolution. Most of the levels of the hierarchical pattern have been built up by the evolutionary process. So the question, why does the same structural pattern appear in entities of all sizes, is related to, and perhaps reducible to, the question about the nature of the evolutionary process by which they are built up.

None of the traditional disciplines are capable of dealing with these questions, which cuts across all of them."
